Chapter Seven

“Good morning, James!” Courtney said pleasantly when she arrived at the country club on Saturday morning. Her arms were laden with bags, but she did her best to look dignified, considering where she was. “I’m here to set up for Sir Glitter’s birthday party tomorrow, hosted by Mrs. Throgmorton. She said it would be all right to bring everything in tonight.”

“Of course,” he said with a small nod before opening the inner foyer door for her and allowing her into the common area. “Can I help you carry your bags, ma’am?”

Once again, she really didn’t want to allow him to help. She was perfectly capable of doing it herself, but the handles from the bags were already digging into her skin. “Thank you so much. That would be wonderful.”

James easily took most of the burden and glided down the hall toward the Zimmerman room. Courtney rolled her shoulders now that she was relieved of some of that weight, but her hands were still too laden down for her to wave to Hailee Hatfield, who was standing near one of the windows in the dining room and talking quietly to another member of the staff, whom Courtney didn’t recognize.

Almost all the doors in the hallway were closed. These led to the rooms that were being renovated, which Courtney knew from her previous visit when she’d had lunch with Mrs. Throgmorton. Instead of the buzzing of saws and the bustling of construction workers, there were only closed doors and the faint tinkling of classical piano music that was being piped in from somewhere else.

“I guess you’ve had a little bit of excitement around here,” she noted as they passed the set of doors through which she’d last seen Patrick Murray. A shiver ran up her spine as she thought about that. A man had been very much alive just a few nights ago, alive enough to get into an argument with someone else. He’d turned around and gone back to work, even, but he was suddenly gone. She didn’t like having to think about the fragility of life. As a secondary thought, she hoped none of Sir Glitter’s friends were too disturbed by the incident not to come to the party. That would spell disaster for sure.

James already carried the stiff posture required of his duty, but Courtney could swear she saw his back become a little straighter and his jaw a little tighter as he gave her a curt nod. “Yes, ma’am.”

He didn’t offer any details, nor did he seem inclined to discuss the matter any further. Courtney didn’t want to make him uncomfortable, so she said nothing else.

“Will you be bringing in any more, ma’am?” he asked politely when they’d reached the party room and as he set the bags on the table.

Courtney was starting to understand why the members of the country club enjoyed belonging here if all of the staff was as nice as James. “Yes, I’ll need to make a few trips if that’s not too much of a bother.
